Military
Military have AWESOME opportunities to mentor a child that makes it both simple and convenient.
In Onslow County, our partnership with the Department of Defense Schools, known as “Operation Big”, provides military personnel, retirees, and their families, as well as, civilian employees with base access to go into one of the DoD Elementary Schools one day per week for one hour to mentor their “Little”. During this time they can play games, read, and do sporting activities at the school site. Many choose to pick one lunch hour during the week to have lunch with their “Little” and talk. Meeting with a “Little” for one hour has proven to have a positive effect on the mentee socially, emotionally, and academically.
Also in Onslow County, we have partnered with Onslow County Schools to provide mentors to the children in select elementary schools.
In Carteret County we have partnerships with all of the elementary schools to allow “Bigs” to meet with their little one hour per week. “Bigs” are also able to be matched with a child at the Boys and Girls Club in Morehead City and meet them after school and during the summer.
We have partnerships with all of the elementary schools in Jones County.
In Craven County we have partnerships with schools in New Bern and Havelock, as well as, the Boys and Girls Club just outside of MCAS Cherry Point’s main gate.
At any of our partner schools, “Bigs” are invited to be match with a “Little” and meet with them one day per week during the school year. They are able to meet with their “Littles” after school and year round at the Boys and Girls Club. Our coordinators can tell you more about the schools and the opportunities available.

Adults mentor elementary age children for one hour during the school day. They meet on the same day, at the same hour each week. Usually the mentor or “Big” will have lunch with the child or “Little” and then work together on academic goals, play games, or just talk to develop a friendship while working on goals that were set at the beginning of the match. Commitment: One year

High School Bigs
Hey High Schoolers! You ROCK! When a High School sophomore, junior, or senior makes the decision to become a “Big”, they are matched with an elementary school student at one of our partner schools. They either meet with their “Little” during the school day or after school, one day per week for one hour. During this time, they may play games, talk, and have a snack with their “Little”. Freshmen can also participate by applying to be a “Big in Training”. High School “Bigs” also become part of a wonderful network of students in our “Mentors Rock Club!” This program provides a fantastic and fun opportunity to not only get volunteer hours for college, but also to have a great and rewarding impact on a kid.
